2025 Partnership with Alibaba Pictures Group Limited Expand the Chinese-Language Market and Showcase Taiwanese Works


(Taipei, February 12) Wanin International Visual Enterprise, Ltd., a company specializing in film investment, distribution, production, and content creation, announced today its collaboration with Alibaba Pictures Group Limited. The partnership aims to introduce Taiwanese film and television content to mainland China and the broader Chinese-language market, encompassing distribution and theater channel collaborations. This initiative marks a significant milestone for Wanin International’s expansion into the global entertainment industry, opening greater exposure opportunities for Taiwanese productions. Looking ahead, Wanin International Visual Enterprise, Ltd. also plans to expand into Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America, injecting fresh momentum into Taiwan’s cultural industry.


According to online platform data, the global box office in 2024 reached $27.85 billion USD, with North America contributing $8.6 billion and mainland China accounting for $5.8 billion. While North American audiences increasingly shift to streaming platforms and other media, the revival of China’s film market has resulted in cinema attendance surpassing 1.01 billion viewers, ranking it second globally in annual box office revenue. The 2025 Chinese New Year holiday period (January 28–February 4) also performed exceptionally well, with an average daily box office of RMB 116 million, accumulating over RMB 10 billion in total. Early 2025 saw China surpass North America in box office revenue, ranking first globally. Previously, Taiwanese films such as More Than Blue earned approximately NT$4.2 billion in the mainland Chinese market, and the film adaptation of Someday or One Day achieved an impressive NT$1.7 billion. This year, the action film The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon has already grossed approximately NT$2.9 billion. With strong support from the mainland Chinese market, Chinese-language content remains a crucial pathway for box office returns.


Both Wanin International Visual Enterprise, Ltd. and Alibaba Pictures Group Limited operate the largest cinema chains in Taiwan and mainland China, respectively. They share a common focus on production and distribution teams dedicated to creating and promoting Chinese-language content. Moving forward, Alibaba Pictures Group Limited will introduce high-quality Taiwanese films and television productions through Wanin International Visual Enterprise, Ltd., while Wanin International Visual Enterprise, Ltd. will assist Taiwanese production teams in leveraging Alibaba Pictures Group Limited’s distribution channels in mainland China and the broader Chinese-language market.


Wanin International Visual Enterprise, Ltd. continues to invest in production and distribution resource integration, with over 20 diverse film and television projects confirmed for development or production. The horror film The Inn, directed by renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Pang Fat, is currently in post-production. Additionally, the Your Vision, Our Mission Chinese-language original feature film script competition, co-organized with Hong Kong’s One Cool Group and South Korea’s CJ ENM, has selected Father Laozi for rapid adaptation into a feature film, targeting a 2025 production start. Wanin International Visual Enterprise, Ltd. is also actively expanding overseas film and television collaborations in Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, establishing strong connections with local teams and setting up a branch office in South Korea.
